Factors Related to Psychiatric Consultation for Schizophrenic Patients Receiving Medical Care

Abstract

About half of the medical admissions of patients with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder we studied required psychiatric consultation. In this patient population, psychiatric sonsultation was positively associated with younger age, longer length of stay, and admission through the emergency room or walk-in clinic and negatively associated with transfer from a state psychiatric facility. Whether patients with schizophrenia on schizoaffective disorder actually experienced worsening or improvement of their symptoms during medical hospitalization deserves further study.
