Human immunodeficiency virus may be the prototypical
biopsychosocial disease with issues at every level, from the cellular
to the social, that are important to consider in psychiatric management.
As will be discussed in this chapter, issues that are important
in the treatment of infected patients include adherence to medical
care, stigma, disclosure of infection, bereavement, and the emergence
of cognitive impairment.
