Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is a time-limited treatment developed in the 1970s for adult outpatients with major depression by the late Gerald L. Klerman, M.D., and Myrna M. Weissman, Ph.D. IPT is well known as a research intervention, having been tested in numerous randomized, controlled clinical trials. In recent years it has begun to spread into clinical practice. In this chapter I review the research-defined indications and outline the general conduct of this relatively simple yet potent psychotherapy.
