A consensual model of the precursors of psychiatric disorders
has emerged in the social science, epidemiological, and social psychiatry
literatures. The model remains flexible in terms of specific operationalizations and
statistical estimation, but an overarching theoretical orientation
has been forged. Table 8–1 presents the general conceptual
model that emerges from previous research. It is a stage model in
that each higher stage represents what are hypothesized to be increasingly proximate
antecedents of psychiatric disorders.
