Cognitive-behavioral techniques currently in use generally combine earlier work that used either solely cognitive or solely behavioral therapies and now encompass a wide variety of treatment protocols. There has been ongoing debate in the literature as to whether strictly behavioral or strictly cognitive strategies have greater treatment utility. However, regardless of mechanistic explanations of change, cognitive-behavioral interventions have been the most frequently studied therapies and have repeatedly been found useful in treating depression in older adults (Koder et al. 1996; Scogin and McElreath 1994; Thompson and Gallagher 1984; Thompson et al. 1987).
