Assessing infants and toddlers is increasingly a requirement within clinical child mental health settings and often involves collaborating with a variety of other infant mental health professionals in assessments and in developing treatment plans. Infant psychiatry is a strength-based, prevention-focused subspecialty of child and adolescent psychiatry that has brought attention to the mental health needs of children from birth through the preschool years. Infant psychiatry focuses on early identification of risk contexts and mental health disorders in infants, young children, and their families and requires a different assessment approach than that used with older children and adolescents.
