Prevalence, Course, and Prognosis | Comorbidity
Current or 3-month prevalence rates for any anxiety disorder
in youth range from 2% to 4%, with median 6-month
and 12-month estimates between 10% to 20%, and
lifetime estimates only slightly higher. Table 20–9 summarizes
research findings on prevalence, course, and prognosis for GAD,
specific phobia, panic disorder, social phobia, and SM in children. Costello et al. (2004) provide a more extensive review of prevalence rates
and developmental trends in epidemiological studies using DSM-III-R
(American Psychiatric Association 1987), DSM-IV (American Psychiatric Association 1994), and ICD-10 (World Health Organization 1992) criteria for childhood anxiety disorders.
Anxiety disorders are common in preschool children, and they follow
similar patterns as those of older children (Egger and Angold 2006).
