Pediatric obesity has quickly become a national epidemic with
significant medical and psychological consequences. Obesity results
from an imbalance between food intake and energy output, leading
to excessive levels of adipose tissue. Although once an adaptive survival
mechanism, excessive adipose tissue now poses significant pathophysiological
risk in the current environment of dietary abundance and limited physical
activity (Daniels et al. 2005).
