DSM-IV-TR describes AN as a refusal to maintain weight (or
lack of weight gain during a period of growth) of 85% of
expected weight for height (ideal body weight). This occurs in the
context of an overriding fear of weight gain and a lack of recognition
of the physical changes that result from malnutrition (body image
distortion or denial of the seriousness of the consequences of malnutrition)
(American Psychiatric Association 2000a; Table 26–1).
