Although there has been a decline in stigma associated with
HIV, as well as promising medical advancements, children and adolescents
with HIV continue to experience psychological distress (Brown et al. 2000a). It is unknown how advances in antiretroviral
therapy and decreasing stigma have affected suicidality. It is also
unknown if stresses at specific stages of illness (e.g., diagnosis,
disclosure to family) are associated with greater suicidality. The
general prevalence of suicidality in adolescents and our lack of
information about its timing underscore the importance of screening
for suicidality throughout the course of treatment for HIV.
