Nearly all children lose to death someone close
to them. One in 20 children will experience the death of a parent
before reaching adulthood; one in seven will experience the death
of an immediate family member (sibling, parent, or grandparent)
by the age of 18 (Social Security Administration 2000).
Thus in one way or another, many children have some experience with
bereavement.
