Brent et al.'s (1997) study of depressed
adolescents included suicidal teens; findings indicate that cognitive-behavioral
therapy (CBT) was superior to both family and supportive therapies
in the treatment of depressive symptoms, but all three treatments
were associated with similar reductions in suicidality. In the multisite
Treatment of Adolescent Depression Study (TADS) in which fluoxetine,
CBT, and the combination were compared with each other and with
placebo, both fluoxetine and the combination produced substantial
improvements in depression relative to placebo and CBT alone, but
only the combination was associated with decreased suicidal ideation
as compared to placebo (March et al. 2004).
