Guided discovery is the most frequently used technique to
help patients articulate automatic thoughts in sessions. This process
involves gentle eliciting, exploring, and questioning of the patient's
thinking. Instead of trying to debate, convince, or sell patients
on an idea, therapists ask Socratic-type questions that encourage
the patient to expand his or her perspective and become actively
involved in the learning process.
