The often asked question "When is family or couples
consultation/therapy indicated?" requires reframing
from a systems perspective. When problems are conceptualized at
the relationship level, an individual's problems cannot
be understood or changed apart from the context in which they occur.
An individual cannot be expected to change without reactions from
others; positive changes in stressful transactions will facilitate
individual change and growth. Thus, the question of "indications" raises
the further question "What is the symptom-maintaining context
of a problem, and how can it most effectively be altered?"
