An understanding of the major categories of the different substances
of abuse provides the interviewer with knowledge about their characteristic
intoxication and withdrawal syndromes. With this knowledge, the
interviewer is better able not only to assess the patient but also
to make appropriate treatment recommendations. It is important to
ask patients about all categories of substances and not just the
patient's primary substance of abuse.
