An understanding of the major categories of the different substances of abuse provides the interviewer with knowledge about their characteristic intoxication and withdrawal syndromes. With this knowledge, the interviewer is better able not only to assess the patient but also to make appropriate treatment recommendations. It is important to ask patients about all categories of substances and not just the patient's primary substance of abuse.
