Physicians who have completed a residency program in general
psychiatry can pursue further training in addiction psychiatry through
a fellowship program (also sometimes called a residency program
in addiction psychiatry). As of May 2005, 41 such postresidency
training programs that were accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME; 2007) existed
in the United States. On average, the fellows spend about half of
their time in direct clinical care and the other half in academic
activities (Galanter et al. 2002). Some of these programs
accept physicians who have completed residency in other fields (e.g.,
internal medicine, neurology). However, unlike psychiatrists, these
fellows would not be eligible for the addiction psychiatry boards.
