On the basis of two placebo-controlled studies (Rice et al. 2001; Rowbotham et al. 1998), gabapentin has received FDA approval for use in the management of postherpetic neuralgia in adults. Gabapentin has also been systemically evaluated in diabetic neuropathy (Backonja et al. 1998).
