Schizophrenia is a complex disorder defined by positive symptoms (hallucinations, delusions, thought disorder), negative symptoms (apathy, alogia, anhedonia, blunted affect), and deterioration of the patient's personal, social, and occupational functioning. Recent advances in elucidating the neurobiology of schizophrenia have capitalized on progress in clinical and basic neuroscience that has contributed to the integration of neurobiology with the clinical features of the disorder.
