Findings from systematic case–control studies (Lilenfeld et al. 1998; Strober et al. 2000) suggest a 7-
to 12-fold increase in the prevalence of AN and BN in relatives
of eating disorder probands compared with never-ill control subjects.
These significant familial recurrence risks of AN and BN provide
impressive evidence of the transmissibility of both phenotypes.
