Nearly one-half of the patients with schizophrenia are reported
to have a lifetime history of an alcohol or a substance use disorder,
compared with 16% of the general population (Regier et al. 1990). Alcohol is the most commonly abused substance
in chronically ill patients, followed by cannabis and cocaine (Selzer and Lieberman 1993; Sevy et al. 1990); first-episode
patients appear more likely to abuse cannabis over other substances
(Rolfe et al. 1999). As in the general population,
men with schizophrenia are more likely to abuse substances than
are women (Mueser et al. 1995).
