The use of antidepressants in the treatment of BN was sparked by the observation that depression is often a comorbid feature of the disorder (Pope and Hudson 1982). In 1982, two groups of researchers conducted small-scale uncontrolled studies indicating that both tricyclic antidepressants and monoamine oxidase inhibitors reduced binge eating and purging (Pope and Hudson 1982; Walsh et al. 1982). These observations were followed by a series of double-blind, placebo-controlled studies confirming the utility of antidepressants in treating BN, at least in the short term.
