A trial of psychosocial therapy
is indicated as the first line of treatment when 1) the patient
and/or family prefers psychosocial treatment, 2) the patient
has contraindications to medication (e.g., pregnancy), 3) the patient
has complex life stressors, or 4) the patient has failed to respond
to medication (Asarnow et al. 1999).
