The foundation of behavioral and cognitive therapies resides in self-monitoring, whereby patients learn to observe their anxious experience and to detect the initial onset of anxious responses. Such learning is facilitated in therapy by discussions with patients about their past anxious experiences as well as through brief inductions of anxious states via using imagery and having patients worry. They are then asked to practice identifying as early as possible any incipient anxiety cues in their daily life.
