Although numerous case reports have indicated therapeutic
efficacy for dynamic therapy in the treatment of hypochondriasis,
controlled trials have not been conducted. Ladee's (1966) prospective study of 23 patients treated with psychoanalytic
therapy resulted in improvement in only 4 (17%) of the patients.
This poor outcome suggests that psychoanalytic therapy, as least
as practiced in the 1960s, is not effective for the majority of
patients with hypochondriasis.
