The Fifth Edition of The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Psychiatry
has undergone the most comprehensive and significant change in its 20-year history.
Although it remains a one-volume, clinically oriented textbook of psychiatry that
has been crafted for use primarily by practicing psychiatrists and advanced psychiatry
residents who may be studying for their board examinations, the Textbook also remains
a standard educational reference for physicians in other specialties, such as family
practice, internal medicine, and neurology. This year we added our good friend and
distinguished colleague, Glen O. Gabbard, M.D., as a co-editor. Dr. Gabbard is a
prolific author of professional and trade books and has written and edited two major
textbooks that have greatly influenced the field of psychiatry: Psychodynamic Psychiatry
in Clinical Practice and Gabbard's Treatments of Psychiatric Disorders,
both now in their fourth editions. Dr. Gabbard will also be publishing a new, comprehensive
textbook in 2008 on psychotherapies. His addition as an editor has provided a useful
clinical and scientific balance to Dr. Yudofsky's expertise in neuropsychiatry and
Dr. Hales' interests in clinical psychiatry.
We are grateful to Alan Schatzberg, M.D., senior editor of The American Psychiatric
Publishing Textbook of Psychopharmacology, for writing such a scholarly
and inspirational Foreword for this edition. His research experience in the field
of psychopharmacology is truly exceptional.
With the burgeoning psychiatric knowledge gained during the last 20 years, the size
of the Textbook has grown from 1,344 pages and 38 chapters in 1988 to 1,672 pages
and 44 chapters in this edition. A total of 8 new chapters were added for the Fifth
Edition. Following Glen Gabbard's recommendations, we added chapters on supportive
psychotherapy, combining psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy, and treatment of gay,
lesbian, bisexual, and transgender patients. New chapters were added in the field
of neuroscience: cellular and molecular biology (which is also included in the Fifth
Edition of The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral
Neurosciences) and neuroanatomy for the psychiatrist. We also added a new
chapter on human sexuality and changed the orientation of the violence chapter to
assessment of dangerousness. Because of the development of new nonpharmacological
somatic treatments in psychiatry, a chapter was added to address this topic.
This edition includes 66 new contributors, with the total number of contributors
increasing from 88 to 104. Fifteen of the chapters have completely new authors.
In summary, 23 of the 44 chapters either address new topics or have new authors,
making the Fifth Edition the most completely revised edition yet.
We have maintained close contact with many of the professionals who purchased the
previous editions of the Textbook and have benefited from their comments and suggestions.
Work on the Fifth Edition began in earnest in late 2005. This edition represents
the culmination of a nearly 3-year effort to provide the most useful and up-to-date
clinical information in the field. In addition to new authors and chapters, all
previous chapters have been extensively updated to include the latest references
and research findings. Included with this edition is access to an electronic version
of the book, along with a PowerPoint presentation of all tables, figures, and key
clinical points for every chapter. An important feature of The American Psychiatric
Publishing Textbook of Psychiatry since its inception has been the combination
of senior and junior authors for selected chapters. For instance, Chapter 10, “Schizophrenia
and Other Psychotic Disorders,” is authored by two bright and energetic assistant
professors, Michael Minzenberg, M.D., and Jong Yoon, M.D., and a senior professor,
Cameron Carter, M.D. Similarly, Chapter 12, “Anxiety Disorders,” features
Professor and Chair Eric Hollander, M.D., together with Associate Professor Daphne
Simeon, M.D. We have found that the addition of more junior authors has infused
the chapters with new research insights and fresh perspectives on the subject matter.
The senior authors have been able to temper these new ideas with their considerable
wisdom and vast research and clinical experience. We believe that these collaborations
enrich the appeal of the chapters to readers at all levels of educational and clinical
experience. We also believe that these collaborations have enriched the diversity
and quality of material presented in the Textbook.
All chapters were reviewed by a member of our editorial board and by the editors.
The editorial board represents a wide range of clinical and research interests and
includes senior psychiatrists, an early-career psychiatrist, and a senior psychiatry
resident. We wanted our textbook to be relevant to our more junior colleagues and
feel that Drs. Florence Kim (an assistant professor) and Julie Young (a third-year
psychiatry resident) have helped us a great deal to achieve this goal.
For this edition we also included an international editorial advisory board. This
group of distinguished psychiatrists represents some of the preeminent academicians
and researchers from around the world. Their main task will be to review carefully
the Fifth Edition and to recommend chapters and portions of chapters for inclusion
in an essentials version of the book to be published in 2010. It is hoped that the
essentials version will gain wide acceptance by our colleagues in other countries.
An enhancement to this edition is a companion Web site at www.PsychiatryOnline.com that offers online access to the
full text of the Textbook and a downloadable PowerPoint presentation containing
all tables, figures, and key clinical points for every chapter. Also available is
an interactive study guide—available both in print and at the companion Web
site—including more than 300 questions and annotated answers corresponding
to textbook chapters. The online version offers 20 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM
and has been approved by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology as part
of a comprehensive lifelong learning program, which is mandated by the American
Board of Medical Specialties as a necessary component of maintenance of certification.
