Various theories of opiate addiction are explored and assessed. Emphasis is placed on the special problems that narcotic addicts have with aggression and the use addicts make of opiates to relieve dysphoria associated with unmitigated aggression. The importance of appreciating the problems with rage and aggression in decisions about treatment choice is discussed.
