Pharmacotherapy of Hispanic Depressed Patients: Clinical Observations

Abstract

The psychiatric records of 41 Hispanic and 21 Anglo, female, depressed outpatients on tricyclic antidepressants were compared. In contrast with the Anglo patients, the Hispanic group received about half the dosage of tricyclics but complained more about side effects. However, a comparable percentage of patients in each group improved. These clinical observations are explained by the interaction of biologic and psychocultural differences between the two groups. Clinicians’ approach to pharmacotherapy in a differential manner is recommended.
