Brief Psychotherapy in Late Adolescence: A Psychodynamic and Developmental Approach

Abstract

Four college students who presented for treatment in crisis exhibited a striking inability to be aware of and to assert their own autonomous strivings. This was understood as the major manifestation of the separation-individuation developmental crisis of late adolescence. Treatment techniques based on a dynamic and genetic understanding of this issue are described.
