The persuasive evidence for poor health outcomes for people with severe mental disorders is extensively summarized in Chapter 7 (“The Case for Primary Care in Public Mental Health Settings”). Because the integration of primary care within a behavioral health setting is of comparatively recent vintage, psychiatrists working on efforts to improve their patients’ physical health will find that effective interventions are just now being devised. This chapter is intended to serve as a guide to these practices as they presently exist, focusing in particular on those that bring primary care services to adults with serious mental illness (SMI) in a mental health environment. While little definitive work has been completed so far, some effective forms of care and promising innovations have already been introduced for provision of primary care and supportive services to this population. It is hoped that this chapter will encourage and direct more effective psychiatric attention to patients’ medical concerns.
