Abstract

The author explores Thomas Szasz's concept of mental illness as socially rather than organically determined, his division of analysands into "seekers" and "avoiders," and the implications of this for autonomy/heteronomy. The author feels that Dr. Szasz may be reinstating the mind-body dichotomy in his emphasis on a division between medicine and psychiatry, although his concern with psychiatry's need for a value system is important.
