Abstract

The authors trace the clinical use of the term "neurasthenia," which began 100 years ago, present theories explaining its etiology, and describe its treatment. The term has remained in use in some European countries including France and Russia, but has become virtually obsolete in the United States. Its recent revival in DSM-II has not yet brought about, to the authors' knowledge, any new interest in this concept.
