Community Control of the Community Mental Health Center: II. Case Examples

Publication: American Journal of Psychiatry

Abstract

The author cites some examples from his own and others' experience to illustrate the issues that have emerged in the movement toward community control of mental health centers. Each example was characterized by consumer dissatisfaction, institutional inability to respond, and black-white conflict. He believes that if psychiatrists can work together with citizen and consumer groups, this will both improve delivery of services and—at state and federal levels—work toward the solution of larger societal problems.
