A Survey of Psychiatrists in Boston and Their Work with Violent Patients

Publication: American Journal of Psychiatry

Abstract

A survey indicated that fewer than half the psychiatrists in Boston evaluate or treat violent patients. Psychiatrists working with violent patients tended to be under 40 years of age and in residency training. Patterns of treatment, suggestions for prevention of violent episodes, types of patients, and sources of referral are described. The author suggests ways to encourage work with violent patients as well as future areas for research.
