A New Academic Year

I grew up in soulful, sunny Memphis Tennessee to a French mother and Japanese-Korean father. From this background emerged an interest in different cultures and how people form their identities. At the same time, I’ve always been curious about the natural world and graduated with a neuroscience major from the University of Chicago. Psychiatry was a wonderful way to meld all my interests together. I soon realized in medical school that a patient with depression may present with certain consistent symptoms; however, each person has his or her own story and unique biopsychosocial framework. Research, more and more, takes this into consideration—from epigenetics to psychological components. Similarly, what I enjoy about the American Journal of Psychiatry Residents’ Journal is the opportunity to collaborate with individuals from across the United States with different backgrounds. This special, unique forum has offered us residents a space to share stories, develop ideas, and build on new knowledge. On a personal level, I have relished writing on different topics—from a case report on serotonin syndrome to a review article on psychogenic nonepileptic seizures to a book review on David Sheff’s Beautiful Boy. Likewise, I have enjoyed helping with editing a variety of articles, especially case reports. I look forward to continuing as Deputy Editor this academic year as I complete my fourth year of training and hope to pursue fellowship in consultation-liaison psychiatry. I also have an interest in psychotherapy, with a focus on mood disorders and trauma. Wishing for another exciting and productive year with the editorial board, authors, and fellow readers!
