Joy

Joy

—spreads like a virus in the train car,

A young lady breakdances and twirls,

Laughs at her friend who captures

It all on her smartphone.

Its source: the phone speakers

Of the bearded man who catches

My eye, with his infectious smile

And rapid-fire Spanish hurled at me.

It disperses in the air, its virulence defying

The language barrier: the dancing girl, giggling,

Confesses to her friend her lack of comprehension

Of the bearded man’s spirited monologue.

Joy droplets land everywhere: on the six-foot-tall

Bespectacled man whose face is buried in his phone,

Body swaying, foot tapping to joy;

On the lady with the pink boots,

Sitting cross-legged, face loosening,

Fingers quivering to joy’s invasion.

Joy becomes an epidemic in the train car,

Spreading from the phone speakers of the spirited,

Kind-eyed, Spanish-hurling, bearded man

With the infectious smile, whose eyes catch mine.

Seated in the corner by the door,

I look away,

Immune to joy.

The poem depicts joy as a virus effortlessly spreading and transcending language barriers. Despite the pervasive spread of joy, the narrator remains detached and immune, unable to feel positive emotions, a common symptom in patients with depressive disorder, anxiety, or posttraumatic stress disorder. The poem explores themes of connection, isolation, and the universal yet elusive nature of joy, illustrating how people with psychological distress can feel isolated and how social interactions can improve mood.
