The intent of this chapter is to quickly give the reader an overview of the Military Health System (MHS) and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, often referred to as the VA. The chapter will cover the missions and structures of each organization. Although often seen from the outside as one organization, they are actually very different. In this chapter we highlight both the similarities and the differences. Some of the topics touched on here, such as transitions from the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) to the VA for wounded service members and the two different disability systems, are extremely complex. Further details are provided in the references or at the relevant Web sites.
