This book is intended for people interested in understanding the minds of others, both children and adults, in a comprehensive, in-depth way. Our -approach is based on the premise that every individual at any given moment is a complex product of his or her endowment, developmental history, current circumstances, and relationships with key figures, as well as the relationship unfolding in the here-and-now patient-therapist interaction. In this book we hope to provide a basis for considering the individual in the first three decades of life in developmental context by offering a way of thinking about traditional developmental phases and clarifying the developmental tasks and challenges associated with each phase, many of which are culture specific. From our point of view as psychodynamic thinkers and therapists, this approach offers the most compassionate and informed method for considering a human life and figuring out how best to help it proceed.
