Excerpt

The toddler is both motorically and developmentally on the move. In the -exciting months between the first and third birthdays, the young child’s -upright mobility and expanding mental capacities transform his or her sense of self and relationship with the mother. A series of momentous and highly visible evolutions—from wobbly initial steps to competent movement, nonverbal gestures to elaborate language-based communication, and imitation to creative symbolic play—expands the toddler’s world beyond people and things in the immediate environment. At the same time, more hidden but crucial internal changes, such as growing self-regulatory abilities and -increased self-awareness, help the toddler begin to achieve mastery over bodily functions and emotional urges, laying the groundwork for superego development.
