Forensic psychiatrists are invaluable contributors to the functioning of the legal system in civil and criminal cases alike. As skilled as the court will be in interpreting laws, conducting trials, and ensuring appropriate verdicts or settlements, it has no real way to determine the presence or absence of required mental capacity, the degree of mental suffering, or the requirements for future medical treatment without resorting to the advice and consultation of qualified experts.
