Bipolar disorder is a chronic, severe mental illness involving instability of mood and energy, manifested by fluctuations between depressive and hypomanic or manic episodes. In this chapter, we provide an overview of the phenomenology, epidemiology, and pathogenesis of bipolar and related disorders and summarize current treatment strategies.
