Excerpt

Across the age spectrum, trauma- and stressor-related disorders represent long-lasting suffering and functional impairment for many but also offer opportunity for helpful diagnosis, early intervention, and therapeutic benefit. These disorders, and the individuals and families affected by them, are the subject of intensive research at every level—from epidemiological and clinical to genomic, translational, neurobiological, and neuropsychological. In this chapter we present the rapidly expanding, complex body of knowledge accumulated from this research (e.g., Ross et al. 2017; Saxe et al. 2016; Shalev et al. 2017; Smoller 2016; Stoddard et al. 2018; Yehuda et al. 2015) and several models for understanding trauma- and stressor-related disorders.
