The DSM-5 “Feeding and Eating Disorders” chapter includes the following diagnostic categories: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder (BED), avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), pica, rumination disorder, and other specified feeding or eating disorder (American Psychiatric Association 2013). A diagnosis of unspecified feeding and eating disorder is used when clinicians do not wish to specify a particular diagnosis. In this chapter we provide an overview of the prevalence, clinical presentation, and specific psychopathology associated with these diagnostic groups as well as descriptions of empirically supported treatments for these conditions. We begin with a discussion of the classic eating disorders (anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa) and move on to discuss the newer disorders, BED and ARFID, and, finally, the rarer disorders, pica and rumination disorder. We conclude with a brief discussion that considers possible future directions in furthering our understanding of the pathology and treatment of eating disorders.
