Excerpt

Supportive psychotherapy is an extensively practiced form of individual psychotherapy that focuses on ameliorating symptoms, improving self-esteem, fostering resilience, and strengthening adaptive skills. Supportive psychotherapy has value in the care of highly diverse conditions occurring across the age spectrum, and it is well received by patients who may not tolerate or be suited to other forms of psychotherapy. Especially in the context of a strong therapeutic alliance, supportive psychotherapy is as efficacious as other forms of treatment for several mental disorders (Arnow et al. 2013; Winston and Winston 2002).
