The process of evaluation and case formulation is essential for all psychotherapeutic approaches. A central objective of the assessment process is to diagnose the patient’s illness and describe the problems so that the patient can be treated appropriately. Another important objective of the evaluation process is to establish a therapeutic relationship, which can further the patient’s interest in and commitment to psychotherapy. A thorough evaluation should help the clinician to select the appropriate treatment approach. The treatment plan should be individualized to meet the needs and goals of the patient.
