Recently, disorders of sleep have been identified as another possible risk factor for death from suicide (Singareddy and Balon 2001). Sleep is one of the most important of all human biological processes. In addition to spending about one-third of our lives asleep, the quality of our sleep influences the quality of our waking lives and our psychological health. Increasing evidence indicates that sleep and sleep disorders also influence suicidal thinking and behavior. This chapter presents evidence of the growing understanding of the link between disordered sleep and suicide; considers possible mechanisms for why disordered sleep is linked to suicide; and discusses practical ways of assessing and managing sleep disorders, particularly in regard to mitigating suicide risk.
