SCPS Partners With NAMI in Fund-Raising Event

The Southern California Psychiatric Society (SCPS) is a longtime observer of Mental Illness Awareness Week; each year it sponsors a booth and provides information about mental illness at the NAMIWalks Los Angeles County event. This year’s walk was held on Saturday, October 1, at Grand Park in downtown Los Angeles.
NAMIWalks Los Angeles County is the county’s largest fund-raising event to support mental health initiatives and fight stigma. Proceeds fund NAMI’s support and education programs for families and individuals living with mental illness. The event is just one of many walks sponsored by NAMI throughout the country.
SCPS members Robert Burchuk, M.D., Lawrence Gross, M.D., and Roderick Shaner, M.D., provided information and answered questions at the booth.
“It was a beautiful day, and the turnout for the L.A. NAMIWalk was inspiring,” said Mindi Thelen, who is executive director of the SCPS. “There were thousands of participants, many of whom visited our booth. NAMI raised $430,082 so far for this year’s walk and the fundraising site is open through December.” ■
