Search Launched For Next Editor of AJP

APA is looking for its next visionary editor for psychiatry’s leading journal.
APA is seeking applicants for the position of editor of its official journal, the American Journal of Psychiatry. The current editor—Robert Freedman, M.D.—concludes his final term on December 31, 2018.
The American Journal of Psychiatry is the most widely read psychiatric journal in the world. It is committed to keeping the field of psychiatry vibrant and relevant by publishing the latest advances in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness. The findings published in the journal explore the full spectrum of issues related to diagnosis, treatment, neuroscience, and patient populations.
These are the major responsibilities of the editor:
Maintaining an overall plan/model concerning format and overall editorial direction of content published by the journal.
Nominating members of the Editorial Board and working with them in preparing and implementing policy, content directions, and procedures.
Soliciting contributions from highly respected voices of authority in subject areas of interest to the field.
Overseeing and ensuring the rigorous and equitable peer review of manuscripts—selecting reviewers, monitoring modifications of revised and resubmitted manuscripts, and making disposition decisions—in a process that is facilitated by an online manuscript tracking system and editorial staff.
Organizing the content of each issue.
Planning and implementing new features as appropriate.
Keeping abreast of ongoing changes and advances in scientific and medical journal publishing, such as quality assurance and accountability and issues of scientific integrity.
Providing an annual report to the APA Board of Trustees.
The position of editor is a part-time position (20 to 30 percent FTE). Most work is done via the Internet and telephone. There is a negotiable honorarium; no employee benefits are provided.
Applicants must be APA members with significant publishing and editorial experience.
Applications are due by November 1. Candidates should submit their curriculum vitae and a cover letter outlining their vision for the American Journal of Psychiatry and their qualifications to realize this vision. Application materials should be sent by email to the Search Committee care of the journal’s executive editor, Michael Roy, at [email protected]. ■
