Earn MOC Credit Through Special Annual Meeting Sessions

Psychiatrists can earn CME credit toward meeting Maintenance of Certification (MOC) requirements by participating in several special educational sessions at this year’s Annual Meeting in San Diego.
Participants in the master course titled “Essential Psychopharmacology,” directed by renowned psychopharmacologist and former APA President Alan Schatzberg, M.D., will be eligible to earn credit toward the Self-Assessment CME (Part II of MOC) as well as Performance in Practice (Part IV of MOC). The course is scheduled for Tuesday, May 23, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m..
The course includes a self-assessment with a series of questions for participants to answer using audience feedback technology.
Additionally, members who attend the popular interactive “Focus Live!” educational sessions will be able to test their knowledge of important topics in psychiatry and earn self-assessment credit for MOC Part II. Participants use mobile devices to answer board-type multiple-choice questions in a session moderated by the editors of FOCUS: The Journal of Lifelong Learning in Psychiatry, Mark Rappaport, M.D., and Raymond Lam, M.D.
Sheldon Benjamin, M.D., will lead a “Focus Live!” session on “Neuropsychiatry” on Tuesday, May 23, from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Also on Tuesday, Lam will lead a session on “Depression” from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Both sessions will be held in Learning Lab II (Room 20BC) in the San Diego Convention Center.
MOC is an initiative of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), an organization of 24 approved medical specialty boards, including the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN), to ensure that physician specialists offer quality patient care through an ongoing process of self-improvement and performance improvement. APA has developed a number of tools and resources to help members meet MOC requirements.
The ABPN is a member of the ABMS, providing certification and MOC for the fields of psychiatry and neurology. The ABPN MOC program is composed of four components:
Part I—Professional Standing (Licensure): Licenses must be kept up to date in your ABPN Physician Folios account.
Part II—Self-Assessment and CME: Candidates gain credit for up to two types of self-assessment activity options. This includes a one-time patient safety course requirement.
Part III—Cognitive Expertise Exam
Part IV—Improvement in Medical Practice (also known as Performance in Practice, or “PIP”): Diplomates can choose either a Clinical Module, reviewing one’s own patient charts; or a Feedback Module, utilizing feedback from professional peers or patients, to complete Part IV. The exercise is designed to identify and implement areas for practice improvement. ■
All certificates issued by the ABPN after Oc-tober 1, 1994, are time limited. Diplomates must pass a recertification exam every 10 years to maintain their certification.
