Want an Interactive Experience? Come to APA’s Learning Labs

Learning Labs offer innovative ways to interact with other meeting attendees.
For the third consecutive year, APA Learning Labs will allow meeting attendees to collaborate through a series of hands-on, interactive sessions covering topics and issues central to clinical psychiatry or psychiatric practices.
The sessions will be held in the Javits Center; Learning Lab I is in Room 1E15, and Learning Lab II is in Room 1E16. The complete schedule of Learning Labs will be posted by the end of March at psychiatry.org/annualmeeting.
This year’s new sessions include the following:
Theatrical Vignettes as an Educational Tool to Improve Communication in Asian-American Families: Clinicians from the Stanford Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences will discuss a project in which theatrical vignettes are being used to improve communication between Asian-American parents and teenagers. They will also discuss how the project may be replicated by clinicians who are looking for novel methods for outreach in their diverse communities. The vignettes have been performed at several local schools and conferences in the past few years and are part of a television series called “Parent Playbook,” now available on the internet. Saturday May 5, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Presenters: Rona Hu, M.D., Eun Kyung Lee, M.D., M.S., Steven Sust, M.D. Learning Lab II.
Microaggressions, Macroeffects: Navigating Power and Privilege in Psychiatry: This session incorporates exercises that demonstrate power imbalance, privilege, and microaggression that can occur in professional settings. A panel of facilitators will lead a group discussion regarding types of microaggressions, common reactions, and how they might affect interpersonal interactions. Tuesday, May 8, 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Presenters: Kimberly Gordon-Achebe, M.D., Madeline Teisberg, D.O., Michaela Beder, M.D. Learning Lab I.
Preventing a Crisis Before It Happens: Principles of Non-Violent Crisis Intervention: Participants will learn to recognize and respond to the stages leading up to a crisis involving a person with mental illness, while examining the role of verbal and nonverbal communication in escalation and de-escalation of the crisis (see article above). Tuesday, May 8, 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Presenter: Moira Wertheimer, J.D., R.N., C.P.H.R.M. Learning Lab II.
Returning sessions include the following:
A Leadership Boot Camp for Residents, Fellows, and Early Career Psychiatrists: Using role plays, small group discussion, vignettes, and other techniques for audience engagement, Laura W. Roberts, M.D., M.A., will demonstrate models for effective communication while helping participants develop their skills as leaders in academic medicine and identify strategies for work-life balance. Saturday, May 5, 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Learning Lab I.
FOCUS LIVE! These sessions, moderated by the editors of Focus: The Journal of Lifelong Learning in Psychiatry, will give participants the opportunity to earn self-assessment continuing medical education credit using their mobile devices to answer board-type questions.
FOCUS LIVE! Neurocognitive Disorders: Monday May 7, 1p.m.-2:30 p.m. Presenters: Mark Rapaport, M.D., William McDonald, M.D. Learning Lab I.
FOCUS LIVE! Anxiety Disorders: Monday May 7, 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.Presenters: Mark Rapaport, M.D., Andrew Goddard, M.D. Learning Lab I.
Innovation and Design Thinking in Mental Health Care: This highly interactive workshop will look at the fundamental reasons why innovation is particularly difficult in health care and will discuss design thinking as a process for innovation. Doctoring is very much like designing, and a better understanding of design can help psychiatrists develop treatment plans and increase patient engagement. Tuesday, May 8, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Medical History Mystery Lab: Here’s your chance to pretend you are a diagnostic sleuth reminiscent of the television show “House.” Audience members will work with experts to determine a patient’s mystery condition and arrive at the correct diagnosis.
