A December 2015 report in Mayo Clinic Proceedings found that in 2014, roughly 54 percent of physicians had at least one symptom of burnout. Compared with 2011, rates of burnout among physicians were higher in 2014 and satisfaction with work-life balance was lower (41 percent versus 49 percent).
The acute nature of the problem spurred APA President Anita Everett, M.D., to make physician wellness and burnout a major focus of her presidency. Among the initiatives she spearheaded were the creation of a toolkit accessible at psychiatry.org/burnout, a series of articles in Psychiatric News, and a special track of sessions at this year’s Annual Meeting. These sessions explore strategies for promoting physician wellness and interventions that can help psychiatrists as well as physicians in other medical specialties.
The centerpiece of the track is a “townhall” hosted by Richard Summers, M.D., chair of the Work Group on Physician Wellness and Burnout. The townhall will feature a dialogue with attendees about their experience and expertise regarding wellness and burnout. It will also be an opportunity to learn about the initiatives APA has undertaken in this critical area, with remarks by Everett and APA CEO and Medical Director Saul Levin, M.D., M.P.A.
The track includes the following sessions:
